**Lesson Plan for Physical Education**
**Year 3 - Team Sports**
**Lesson Duration:** 60 minutes
**Lesson Topic:** Team Sports
**Learning Objectives:**
1. Understand the basic rules and strategies of selected team sports.
2. Develop fundamental motor skills like running, throwing, and catching.
3. Foster teamwork, communication, and fair play among students.
4. Enhance coordination, balance, and spatial awareness.
**Equipment Needed:**
- Cones
- Whistle
- Soft balls (e.g., foam balls for safety)
- Bibs or coloured bands to differentiate teams
- Portable goals (adjustable size)
**Warm-Up (10 Minutes):**
1. **Introduction (2 minutes):** Briefly explain the importance of warming up. Discuss the focus on team sports for the day.
2. **General Warm-Up (3 minutes):** Jogging around the field/playground, followed by dynamic stretches (arm circles, leg swings, etc.).
3. **Sport-Specific Drills (5 minutes):**
- Shuttle runs between cones to practice quick direction changes.
- Light passing drills with soft balls to warm up throwing and catching mechanisms.
**Main Activity (40 Minutes):**
**1. Basic Skills Practice (15 minutes):**
- **Passing and Catching (5 minutes):** Pair up students. They stand a few metres apart and practice throwing and catching a soft ball. Gradually increase distance to challenge their skills.
- **Dribbling (5 minutes):** Set up a course using cones. Students take turns dribbling a soft ball around the cones using feet (football/soccer) or hands (basketball).
- **Shooting/Scoring (5 minutes):** Set up small goals or target areas. Students practice aiming and shooting balls accurately into the goals.
**2. Team Game Practice (25 minutes):**
- **Division into Teams (2 minutes):** Divide the class into small teams (e.g., 5-6 students per team). Provide bibs or bands to differentiate between teams.
- **Mini Game 1 (10 minutes):** A simplified version of football (soccer):
- Duration: 10 minutes
- Basic rules: No hands, score by getting the ball into the opponent's goal. Focus on passing and teamwork.
- **Mini Game 2 (10 minutes):** A simplified version of ultimate frisbee with a soft ball:
- Duration: 10 minutes
- Basic rules: Players cannot move when holding the ball, must pass to teammates to move the ball upfield, score by catching the ball in the end zone. Emphasis on spatial awareness and communication.
- **Discussion and Feedback (3 minutes):** Gather students and discuss what they observed about teamwork, strategies used, and areas for improvement. Encourage positive reinforcement.
**Cool Down and Review (10 Minutes):**
1. **Cool Down Exercises (5 minutes):**
- Gentle jogging slowing to a walk.
- Static stretches focusing on legs, arms, and back to prevent stiffness.
2. **Review of the Lesson (5 minutes):**
- Recap the key skills and concepts learned.
- Discuss why teamwork and communication are vital in team sports.
- Provide positive feedback and acknowledge student achievements.
**Homework/Extension Activity:**
- Ask students to think about other team sports they might enjoy and encourage them to watch or play these sports with family or friends.
- Encourage students to write a short reflection about what they most enjoyed and what they found challenging in today’s lesson.
**Assessment:**
- Observe student participation and engagement.
- Note improvement in motor skills and ability to follow basic game rules.
- Foster positive teamwork and communication through verbal encouragement and feedback.
**Health and Safety Considerations:**
- Ensure the playing area is clear of hazards.

**Teacher's Notes:**
- Adjust activities based on the skill levels of the students.
- Encourage all students to participate and provide assistance where needed.
- Keep the atmosphere fun and inclusive to promote a positive attitude towards physical activity.
